Dr. Scott Peters Presents Common Oral Lesions: A Guide to Diagnosis and Management in Your Practice

Course Description
This lecture will review the diagnosis and management of some of the more commonly encountered oral mucosal pathologies in dental practice. Conditions to be discussed include, but are not limited to, lichen planus, mucosal pemphigoid, pemphigus vulgaris, leukoplakia, erythroplakia, geographic tongue, coated tongue, oral manifestations of infectious pathologies (viral, fungal, bacterial), xerostomia and burning mouth syndrome. For each entity, the path to diagnosis will be explained, and, when applicable, biopsy site selection techniques will be reviewed. The session also will focus on different topical and systemic medications that can be used in management of some of these conditions.

Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to: 1.Diagnose oral mucosal pathologies frequently encountered in oral and maxillofacial surgery practice. 2.Discuss the different topical and systemic therapies available for management of these conditions. 3.Describe the role of soft-tissue biopsy in diagnosis and identify appropriate biopsy sites for different conditions.

Bio
Dr. Peters is an Associate Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Geisinger Health System. He earned his B.A., D.D.S., and completed post-graduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology from Columbia University. A diplomate and fellow of the American Board and Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, he received the William G. Shafer Award. Dr. Peters is a primary author of the 8th edition of Oral Pathology for the Dental Hygienist and has published in various journals. He serves as CLIA director for Geisinger Oral Pathology, overseeing biopsy services and a clinical practice.
