The potential loss of a dental implant from complications is one of the hottest topics in dental continuing education programs today. Of the myriad of pos-sible problems, peri-implantitis is one of the most common that is being seen routinely in practice. Peri-implantitis has been viewed as a bacterially initi-ated disease, hence, the strong support for the association with a history of periodontitis as a precursor. However, this can extend far beyond this limited view. This lecture will take a look at why a history of periodontitis is a risk beyond the bacterial implications of this disease. Strategies will be offered to help minimize its impact with an emphasis of this lecture on both aggres-sively preventing and treating peri-implant mucositis, its precursor, as well as collaborative approaches involving both the restorative dentist and the periodontist/surgeon. Objectives: •Discuss the role of mucositis as a precursor for peri-implantitis. •Identify those attributes to both periodontitis and peri-implant mucositis patients that make them more susceptible to developing peri-implantitis. •Discuss how preventive strategies must be modified to avoid this implant threatening complication.
